“Listening to God is a worthy goal in prayer, but how to do it? Those who have been involved in the Charismatic Renewal often speak about having “heard this or that from the Lord.” Some people seem to be able to hear words from God in the silence of their hearts, but as St. Paul reminds us “we know in part …we see indistinctly as in a darkened mirror.” [I Cor 13] A more accessible way of “listening to God” is by using Scripture. I mentioned a couple weeks ago that Mental prayer usually begins with a meditation on a passage of the Bible. When we read a passage from the Gospel, Jesus is speaking to us; Better to hear from Jesus directly through scripture than to try to conjure up a message from God. Say for example you read the story about Jesus healing the blind man Bartimaeus [Mark 10]. The first step toward hearing Jesus talk to you in the Gospel is by placing yourself into the story. Perhaps you might wonder if you were blind how Jesus might open your own eyes? Bartimaeus cried out to Jesus, and would not be silenced by his friends for making such a scene. Had you been there would you too have tried to silence him? Can you empathize with his desire to see? How would you have reacted to his healing? Would you rejoice with him, or use it as a pretext to get angry with Jesus because he didn’t automatically heal all blind people? That sort of thing is the first level of “meditation” and from it you might then make an act of thanksgiving that Jesus had compassion on this poor man. This is meditation level one.

““Escuchando a Dios es una meta digna en oración, pero cómo lo haces? Aquellos quienes están involucrados en la Renovación Carismática frecuentemente dicen “escuché esto ú otro del Señor.” Algunas personas parece que tienen la habilidad de escuchar palabras de Dios en el silencio de sus corazones, pero como San Pablo nos recuerda “ahora vemos de una manera indirecta, como en un espejo, y borrosamente.” [I Cor 13]. Una manera más accesible de “escuchar a Dios” es usando las Escrituras. Yo mencioné hace unas semanas atrás que oración Mental usualmente comienza con una meditación sobre un pasaje de la Biblia. Cuando leemos un pasaje del Evangelio, Jesús nos está hablando; Mejor escuchar de Jesús directamente por medio de la escritura que tratar de evocar un mensaje de Dios. Por ejemplo, digamos que usted lee la historia sobre cuando Jesús sanó al hombre ciego Bartimeo [Marcos 10]. El primer paso para escuchar a Jesús hablando con usted en el Evangelio es ponerse usted mismo en la historia. Talvez usted puede imaginar si usted fuera ciego, cómo Jesús le abriría sus propios ojos? Bartimeo le gritó a Jesús, y sus amigos no pudieron callarlo ya que estaba haciendo un escándalo. Si usted hubiera estado ahí también hubiera tratado de callarlo? Puede usted identificarse con su deseo de ver? Cómo usted puede haber reaccionado a su sanación? Se alegraría con él, ó lo usaría como pretexto para enojarse con Jesús porque él no sanó automáticamente a toda la gente ciega? Esta clase de cosa es el primer nivel de “meditación” y de aquí puede entonces hacer un acto de gracia porque Jesús tuvo compasión de este pobre hombre. Esto es el primer nivel de meditación.
